Traveling is not just about visiting new places; it is also about being immersed in a different culture. With all that it brings: art, customs, history, politics, religion… and, of course, food. Typical cuisine is a big part of what makes a culture unique. For that reason, many travelers make it a point to try local fare wherever they go.
Raised in rural Norway, Agnes and Perhad the opportunity to travel the world experimenting local food from different cultures. On this occasion, they plan a trip to South America, dreaming of the taste of a true Argentinean meal accompanied with a local family.
Agnes is partial to organic farming and locally-sourced foods. While Per cannot wait to taste the world renown Argentinean steak. They know they want to experience authentic, local dishes and also have an opportunity to mingle with the locals over a meal. However, how can they get this authentic experience without a proper invitation into a family’s home?
After hearing Agnes and Per’s desire and talking about their lives, their relationships and their previous experiences, our ALCHEMIST TEAM knew they could provide a unique and memorable dining experience. They have the perfect match for them, a local family from Buenos Aires that would cook a meal and host them in their home for an incredible evening.
It is Friday night and our couple ponders what to do with their evening when they receive a knock at the door. It is the hotel concierge with a hand written invitation. They are both invited to a special dinner at the Lanzelotti’s. At once, they must take the car waiting for them to Belgrano, a residential neighborhood in the north part of Ciudad de Buenos Aires. It is here, Maria and Federico await them as if they were long lost family.
As our guests come through the door, they are greeted in typical Argentinean fashion with a hug and kiss on the cheek as well as kind greetings. Federico opens a bottle of organic wine, to accompany homemade bar snacks. As if they were acquaintances already, Per and Federico are engaged in a conversation about one of their passions: wine. Federico was born in Mendoza, land of Argentina’s finest wines and bodegas. It just so happens that Per had just arrived from a five-day tour to the Vineyards in that area.
Meanwhile, on the other side of the house, Agnes joins Maria in a salad preparation. Our host has a small but complete vegetable garden in their backyard and she just finished cutting some greens for this meal. Since Maria loves cooking for her family and friends, she shows Agnes local ingredients and cooking methods. This is a special memento Agnes takes home to enrich her own meals.
After some time to meet their fellow guests, all of them sit to a gorgeous organic salad with homemade dressing. Meanwhile, Federico is quite committed to the grill. The fire had been lita few hours earlier and he is slowly smoking different cuts of beef and veggies. The main course is a delicious smoked meat with grilled eggplant, zucchini, red onion, bell pepper and potatoes. Traditional salsas such as Chimichurri, Criolla and garlic mayonnaise cannot be missed. Also, whole wheat artisan bread will adorn our guests table.
It looks like every detail is perfectly set in this table. Agnes and Per are amazed by the dedication our hosts have in this food preparation. “It is not only food, it is about sharing our culture through the art of cooking,” Maria explains.
The couples laugh and cheer while drinking herbalteas to cleanse the palate and talk about their countries’ histories and contemporary situations. They share past and future trips, family and life experiences, dreams…
Soon after this engagingcross-culture conversation, it is time for an indulgent dessert! Maria emerges from the kitchen holding an impressive plate: homemade caramel flan with dulce de leche. This is a traditional recipe that can satisfy any sweet tooth. What a terrific conclusion to a memorable dinner that will leave a lasting impression with our travelers for many years to come.
